I think it just resets any points you've put into your stats before you commit to it. I already know i can't edit my save (some issue with the steam version of the game), so i need either a trainer (none of them seem able to reset or reduce stats, just increase them, so i've almost discarded this route) or using cheatengine. The game will then put you into the level up screen, with your character reset to their base stats.
